SPACE
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) treatment is an evidence-based program designed SPACE was developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center to help parents manage their child’s anxiety symptoms, OCD, and other related issues. Unlike traditional therapeutic approaches, SPACE focuses on altering parental behaviors rather than those of the child. Research shows that accommodating your child’s anxious behaviors can maintain their anxiety. SPACE teaches parents to gradually reduce these accommodating their child’s behaviors while increasing support.
A significant benefit of SPACE is that it empowers parents to have the tools they need to help them outside of therapy sessions and become active participants in their child’s emotional development.
For children, the SPACE treatment helps build resilience and reduce their anxiety. By facing their anxieties in a supportive environment, children learn coping mechanisms that will help them throughout their lives.
SPACE has been adapted for two additional populations.
Is your child over 18 and they are still living at home with you, not attending school or unable to get a job? We also offer Failure to Launch which is a parent-only treatment to help your adult child launch into the world successfully.
Is your child an extremely picky eater where they are not meeting nutritional requirements? If so, your child might have Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).
